The Samsara of Cleaning

April 23, 2024

We’re all busy as hell.

Finding time to make our living spaces feel good to be in takes work, and more importantly, it takes time.

From overflowing closets to jam-packed countertops, clutter seems to creep into our spaces no matter what we do. Yes, dear reader, even for me.

But why? Why is this such a persistent problem for most people, despite our best efforts to clean our rooms and kitchens? After all, sheesh, I just cleaned this a few days ago…!

In this little post, I’m going to break down a few of the common reasons why we tend to struggle with the endless samsara of cleaning.

  1. Lack of Organization Skills: The number one culprit behind clutter is simply lack of practice! Many people just don't know how to effectively organize their belongings. Without a systematic approach to managing your things, items tend to accumulate. Without clear organizational systems in place, items end up piled on surfaces or crammed into closets, creating visual chaos. From paper clutter to tangled cords, every item should have a home where it belongs!

  2. Emotional Attachment to Items: Whether it's sentimental keepsakes, gifts from loved ones, or items associated with past experiences, letting go of our old things can be challenging. Many people struggle to part with items they no longer use or need. Some folks experience guilt over getting rid of something given to them, or discomfort with waste, or the belief that they might need it someday. Give yourself permission to release unnecessary items that no longer serve you.

  3. Energy levels: Some people struggle with the activation energy needed to keep up with tidying their space, which is a sort of snake eating its’ own tail: Our spaces become more and more cluttered, making it seem more and more impossible to create a system that not only works for us, but is also easy tomaintain, even when energy levels are low.

  4. Life Changes: Major life events such as moving, downsizing, or welcoming a new family member can disrupt established routines and lead to clutter accumulation. Adjusting to these changes while managing possessions can be overwhelming, often resulting in temporary clutter until new systems are established. This is natural, and moving can be a great time to take stock of your belongings and systems!

In the journey towards a clutter-free living space, it's important to remember that progress is a process, not an overnight transformation. When we slow down and take stock, we can gradually cultivate a more organized and harmonious space that serves you.
